Rental Car Driving Tips in Dubai

Driving in Dubai isn't the easiest task in the world and can be a challenge at times even for the most hardened expat, but don't let that phase you. It can be very rewarding when you get used to it and offers flexibility that you don't get with other forms of transport.

It also opens up the possibility of easy access to the rest of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). For example if you're taking a break in Dubai, Abu Dhabi has some excellent facilities which are interesting to visit such as Ferrari World with the fastest roller coaster in the world. The easiest and most convenient way to access this is with a rental car.

Some great tips here for driving in Dubai.

  • Culture - Although you may see people using hand gestures, they are generally frowned upon but could also get you into trouble. Keep your hands on the wheel and resist the temptation to express your annoyance by hand gestures.
  • Driving Style - Remember that Dubai is a cultural mix of people from many different countries. You'll see a combination of driving styles from haphazard, cautious, courteous to just plain rude. People driving in Dubai have come from countries will all sorts of driving style and you're no exception in your rental car. Drive safely and carefully and expect that they may not know your culture's expectations on the road.
  • Know Your Route - Dubai's roads are mostly modern, wide with a combination of traffic signals and roundabouts. To get to where you need to be you may need to make a U-turn as turning across lanes on the majority of the major routes is not permitted or even possible.
  • Know the Rules - Driving in Dubai is relatively simple and has the same basic rules as most European or American countries. The signs are in English and Arabic and self explanatory. Read the tips on driving provided by the rental car companies in Dubai.
  • Take your Time - Driving in an unknown location in your own country can sometimes be stressful and this is amplified in another country. Take your time and most of all, enjoy it.

What to Expect from a Dubai Car Rental

Do I need additional car insurance to drive a rental car in Dubai?

The car rental companies always have the standard insurance included, but this will have a high excess. Driving all over the U.A.E. has a higher risk than driving in many other countries. There are a mix of cultures and nationalities on the road and minor collisions are a common occurrence. We advise, always ask for the full Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) so that in the event of even a minor bump while the car is parked you will not have to pay extra. This insurance is a little expensive but will save you a headache in the long run.

What driving licences are accepted to drive in Dubai?

Some countries licences are accepted for driving in the U.A.E. however there could be a problem if your driving licence isn't in English or Arabic. It is always best to have an international driving licence issued from your country for the purpose of driving in Dubai, although not necessary if you're from one of these countries:

  • UK
  • USA
  • France
  • Belgium
  • Holland
  • Switzerland
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Austria
  • Greece
  • Canada
  • South Africa
  • Romania
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • or if you hold any GCC driving licence*

* GCC is the Gulf Cooperation Council, it's a group of countries in the Middle East. If you don't know if you hold a GCC driving licence, then you probably don't.
